Blunch – Blend on the Water

Who doesn’t love brunch!? Seriously?!

WHO DOESN’T LOVE BRUNCH!?!?!

If I could, I would honestly quit my day job, find new brunch spots all around the tristate area and blog about them from the comfort of my MacBook Pro.

Recently, me and a few girlfriends ventured out to Long Island City where we found a Latin-fusion restaurant called Blend on the Water. Now this spot actually has two locations: Blend and Blend on the Water, but if you have the choice for a scenic spot and a regular restaurant, obviously we chose the location that overlooks the water. It’s all about the views! And of course, the food.

We started off the meal with Mimosas and Bellini’s ($6). The Mango Bellini is to die for! Pair anything with champagne and I’m pretty much into it. After all, Champagne is like “tasting the stars.”

I had the Huevos Rancheros ($16) – which featured sunny side up eggs, a black bean puree, chicken and pepper jack cheese, sofrito sauce, and a warm tortilla.

Have you ever tried Blend’s Blunch? If so, let me know what you’ve tried! Their menu is delicious all around with true and authentic Latin tastes. The atmosphere is worthy of it’s hip New York location, and while the service was a bit slow, we didn’t mind it too much as the views of the water were absolutely breathtaking with huge windows to gaze from.

*Please take into consideration, if you are planning on visiting, Blend does have a dress code you need to me mindful of.

Hot Drinks to try this Season!

Let’s face it, rainy weather and grey skies just makes us want to curl up into a ball and be couch potatoes! Luckily, some of my personal favorite fast food chains have come up with helpful ways that will make us cope with the winter griege skies and make us want to be productive individuals in society! –At least a little bit!

My personal favorite this time of year is definitely the S’mores Latte! Starbucks of course offers this every so often, but Van Gogh’s Ear Cafe in Union, NJ offers this treat all year round!  It’s a toasted marshmallow and chocolate latte topped off with graham crackers, cinnamon, and caramel sauce. All this warm yummy goodness just for 6 bucks will make you feel like you’re sitting ’round a campfire.

Another drink that has been all the rave this season is the Smoked Butterscotch Latte from Starbucks. This latte has “notes of smoked butterscotch intermingled with their signature espresso.” This drink is seasonal so be sure to try it while it’s still on the menu! Starbucks also recently debuted Sous Vide Egg bites, perfect for those constantly in a rush and looking for a high protein meal on the go. Check out a review on those bad boys here!

And last but certainly not least, we must always give kudos to Dunkin Doughnuts, for always staying on their toes and trying to (re)invent a new frothy concoction. This particular time of year they are focusing on bakery favorites, such as a vanilla cupcake and fudge brownie and turning both into caffeinated drinks. According to Dunkin fans, they give these sugary drinks two thumbs up!

S’mac Dab in the Middle

Traveling to the Kips Bay neighborhood of Manhattan can quite honestly be like traveling to New Jersey – unexpected, sometimes by accident, and pleasantly surprising. Next to a movie theater is a Staples, of all things, and not too far off is perhaps one of the cheesiest places to visit ever.

1

S’mac, home of the irresistible Mac-n-Cheese, opened up its doors back in 2006 and hasn’t looked back! Short for Sarita’s Mac and Cheese, S’mac has tons of cheesy combinations. During my short visit, I couldn’t resist trying one.

6

I had “La Mancha” – $8.50 for the small plate, which they call “Nosh” -can we say, hipster! It’s a taste of Spain mixed in with your classic noodle and cheesey goodness. Featuring manchego cheese, fresh fennel, and of course, white onions.

And while S’mac is obviously catered strictly towards mac-n-cheese lovers galore, it doesn’t discriminate against vegans and lactose intolerant folks, which is a great thing if you want to opt for something a bit easier on the stomach!

If you ever find yourself strolling alongside a huge Staples store, take my advice and try out some S’mac!

Naked Balls & More

A friend recommended we try out The Meatball Shop. While there are various locations all throughout the city, the upper west side is where I have been living lately (not literally unfortunately), so Amsterdam Ave. was where it’s at!

3

We arrived and were seated shortly, so thumbs up for great service! And it was our first time, so we actually didn’t realize how to order until we noticed the dry erase markers sitting in a glass on our table. The menu was filled with little boxes that you had to check off, indicating which kind of meat you preferred in your meatballs, cheeses, sandwiches, sauces, and more!

1

I had the meatball smash – $12.00, which featured 2 meatballs with your choice of sauce and cheese on a brioche bun. I had the special, which was the beef meatballs with a fried mac and cheese center! The paired sauce was the chili cheese, also a part of the specials, and as for cheese, I couldn’t resist the mozzarella! This was also paired with a “simple salad” which had a variety of greens and apple slices.

6

4

For my drink, I decided to have dessert before my actual meal so I chose the classic ice cream float – $5.00.

My date for the evening chose the peach sangria – $8.00, but since we made it just in time for happy hour, it was actually half the price! It was made with white wine, citrus, mint, grape, and of course, a peach slice as a garnish.

5

He also had the naked balls – $9.00, which had 4 balls, loaded with your choice of sauce, topped with grana padano cheese, and a slice of focaccia bread. For his choice of balls, we both ended up choosing the specials!

2

If ever you find yourself craving some balls, try out The Meatball shop!

Popcorn and Everything Else

We are in the middle of summer guys! We made it! And while the months are still hot hot hot, everyone I’m sure is still trying to stay cool inside with their AC’s blasting while maintaining their beach bods.

One snack that is both fun to munch and pairs well with nearly everything is…yep! You guessed it! POPCORN! I feel like this is a totally underrated snack, but with so many flavor combinations, like jalapeno, white cheddar, and even dark chocolate, this snack is low in calories and full of flavor. And even goes great with fruits! More specially grapes. Ok, ok, fermented grapes. My favorite after dinner or during dinner or brunch beverage – wine.FullSizeRenderWhile I usually make my own artwork, the team over at SkinnyPop was kind enough to let me share this awesome little guide with you all! SkinnyPop is a great healthy snack as it is Non-GMO, it’s gluten free, dairy free, peanut free, preservative free, and has zero trans fatty-acids! Just one bag only has 100 calories so you’d have nothing to worry about when it comes to your diet. Be sure to let me know which flavor pairings you prefer! I tried the original blend with paired with the Malbec but I’m more of a sweets kind of gal, so Dark Chocolate and Pinot Noir sounds like a dream to me!

Pull Up La Marina in a Yacht

Hello, beautiful people of the world!

If you haven’t been living under a rock, you would know that rappers and artists rave about La Marina’s nightlife, and while my trip to the exclusive spot was during the day, I have nothing but good things to say about it as well! If you’ve never traveled uptown for good eats, this place is definitely a good one to pop your cherry with.

1

The view was absolutely amazing, and so were the passion fruit sangrias – $10.00 per glass.

6

I chose the Split Avocado Salad – $15.00. This salad was literally in the avocado, and underneath the ripened fruit was toasted quinoa, summer veggies, basil, all topped off with generous slices of parmesan cheese. I also added the pan seared chicken on the side for an additional $6.00

52

The second entrée was the La Marina burger – $19.00. This Hudson valley beef burger was topped with NY State cheddar cheese, sliced beefsteak tomatoes all on a sesame seed bun and served with a side of sherry vinegar and thyme seasoned fries.

3

4

Of course, no meal has ever been complete without dessert! As shown here, we decided to go with the Dyckman Street Banana Split – $13.00. This delectable dessert featured the usual flavors of ice cream – vanilla bean, chocolate, and strawberry – sandwiched in between two bananas, topped off with whipped cream, cabernet infused chocolate sauce, brandied cherries, and toasted peanuts.

7

If you’re a stranger to the streets uptown Manhattan, go ahead and take a bite at La Marina!

Sarabeth’s @ Central Park South

Hey, Upper East Siders! And of course everyone else out there looking for their next dose of NYC living. I hope everyone enjoyed their Father’s Day weekend! My dad and I always love venturing out to Central Park and eating at one of our favorite cafe’s, Sarabeth’s. There are several locations throughout the city, including one on Park Ave, Tribeca, Upper West Side, Upper East Side, and of course, Central Park South.

table.jpg

We had coffee’s to start off our “meal,” which truly just consisted of sweets. I chose to have the Root Beer Float, which had vanilla bean, cream, root beer, and Tito’s – $13.00

float.jpg

My dad opted for a non-alcoholic sweet, but let me order for him, so I chose the Flight of Ice Cream Sandwiches – $13.00.

Sarabeth’s first opened back in 1981 and they have grown ever since, even serving places internationally! If you are ever in the city and pass by, be sure to try some of their desserts! After all, dessert doesn’t go to the stomach, it goes straight to the heart!

Brunch Buddies

Since when is Brunch ever a bad idea? Waking up lazily then driving around with the windows down and the sunshine hitting your face as you smell the air heavy with a mixture of grass and sunscreen… Oh what a life!

This passed weekend, as I try to do with every weekend, was yet another brunch date so here are a few images of my most recent favorite spots!

  • The Turning Point – located in several places throughout the Dirty Jerz, we visited the one in Hoboken. The view was amazing and I had the Berry Chocolatey, chocolate chip pancakes with strawberries on top, a side of whipped cream, warmed maple syrup, and a strawberry compote. I chose to add a side of sunny side up eggs and a chocolate chip shake-a-chino!

FullSizeRender.jpg IMG_6212.JPGIMG_6214.JPG

  • 1742 Wine Bar – located on the upper east side of New York, New York, this place was rather small but the food was amazing! The bellinis were my favorite but of course, and nothing to me screams brunch like fruits and sweets so of course, I chose the french toast which was served oh so delicately with fresh fruit.FullSizeRender-2.jpg FullSizeRender-1.jpg

If you guys try one of these places, please enjoy!

Drink Up!

You go to a restaurant and one of the first things your waiter will ask, assuming that they are providing you with good service, is what you would like to drink. Scanning the list of frozen alcoholic specials that they serve, and even the mundane list of the usual fountain drinks which also is loaded with sugar, your stomach rumbles and rejects even the slightest thoughts of consuming them and using it to fuel your body.

After a great workout, or even on a warm summer day, nothing is more thirst quenching than a tall glass of water! But water does way more for us than just hydrate our dry throats and mouths! With a little help from the writers and nutritionists at Breaking Muscle, here are some great reasons why water is so important and how it can change your life to drink up!

images-2

Our bodies are composed of water, so if you fail to replenish the body properly, organs start failing and your body will in fact shut down. Water also may help to prevent cancer, help you to perform better throughout your day, and even lose weight! (Many times, we eat because we think we are hungry, but in fact, our bodies are merely sending us signals that we are thirsty!) Sometimes, we get headaches caused by dehydration, which of course a bottle of water will also cure. Water can also help your skin get a healthy and natural glow. Sure, there are tons of beauty products that claim to do the same, but water will give you that glow from within. Our skin is the largest organ in our body. Regular and plentiful water consumption can improve the color and texture of your skin by keeping it hydrated and thus building new cells properly. Drinking water also helps the skin do it’s job of regulating the body’s temperature through sweating. So it’s a no-brainer that in order to lead healthy and fulfilling lives, we should cut the amount of soda and juices that we consume and focus our energy and attention to water.

The #StopDropAndChugChallenge has aided in the fitness battles with trying to lead healthier lives! But, it also made me think of other drinks that are advertised as being healthy but perhaps aren’t. I’ve discussed coffee and tea on my blog before, and I even touched on the whole juicing phase, but never have I ventured into the unchattered territories of carbonated or “Sparkling Water.”

sparkling water

According to the NY Daily News, “Sparkling water is often cited as one of those healthy drinks you’re supposed to switch to when you quit sugary soda. It’s sugar-free and calorie-free, and it hydrates.” Still, this left a yearning desire for a clear cut answer to the undying question of is it good for you, or not?

“If somebody doesn’t like the taste of water, they shouldn’t be concerned if sparkling is all they’re drinking,” said Manhattan-based nutritionist Keri Gans, RDN, CND. “Sparkling water is just as hydrating. All it is is added carbonation.”

And…carbonation is what again?

Carbonated water is water into which carbon dioxide gas under pressure has been dissolved. Some of these have additives such as sodium. This process, known as carbonation, is a process that causes the water to become effervescent. –Wikipedia

Sparkling waters, from left, Splitrock, Antipodes, Guadianello , Mount Franklin, Capi, Voss, Badoit, Perrier, San Pellegrino, San Benedetto.

Sparkling waters, from left, Splitrock, Antipodes, Guadianello , Mount Franklin, Capi, Voss, Badoit, Perrier, San Pellegrino, San Benedetto.

Ahhh, so we have our answers! Carbonated water isn’t bad for you and if that’s all that you’re drinking in an efforts to rid your mind of craving that Pepsi, you’re in the clear! However, there are still some things to watch out for, as too much of anything is never a good thing. For instance, unflavored carbonated water won’t do you much harm, but those packets that allow additional flavoring may have secret sugars added within them.

If you’re still craving soda but not a big fan of the unflavored sparkling variety, try flavoring your fizzy water with mint leaves, fruits such as cucumber, or lemon juice!

What are you drinking today?
